Nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima

The Enola Gay dropped the bomb on orders given by then President Harry S. Truman (a Mason).

The dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima, and later on Nagasaki, remains one of contention regarding its necessity. The effect on Japan's decision to surrender and the ethical justification is still highly debated.

Truman on August 9th, 1945 said "I realize the tragic significance of the atomic bomb ... It is an awful responsibility which has come to us ... We thank God that it has come to us, instead of to our enemies; and we pray that He may guide us to use it in His ways and for His purposes."

Truman was raised in Belton Lodge, Missouri, in 1911. In September 1940, while running for re-election to the Senate, Truman was elected Grand Master of Missouri.
