In 1935 MacArthur was asked by his long time friend Manuel Quezon to become Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. This was shortly after the Philippines became a semi-independent state.

With permission of then President Roosevelt, MacArthur traveled to the Philippines to assume his role. He would setup a West Point style military academy to train the conscripted soldiers in the Philippine army.

The official ceremony to appoint MacArthur as Field Marshal happened at the Malacañan Palacehe where MacArthur was given a unique uniform and a Gold Baton.

MacArthur was a member of Manila Lodge No. 1.
