Thomas Gibson-Carmichael, 1st Baron Carmichael Passes Away

Thomas Gibson-Carmichael, 1st Baron Carmichael was a Scottish peer and politician.

Carmichael was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He went to school at Wixenford School and St. John's College, Cambridge.

In 1886 Carmichael would marry Hon. Mary Helen Elizabeth. The couple would have no children. That same year Carmichael started his political career by being the private secretary for two Secretaries for Scotland, both in the same year.

After that Carmichael sought a seat in Parliament and was unsuccessful on his first attempt. In 1895 he would go to Parliament in the House of Commons. He would hold that seat until the 1900 general election.

In 1908 Carmichael would be appointed as the Governor of Victoria, Australia. He would serve in that position until 1911. After that he would immediately assume the post of Governor of Madras in India.

Carmichael was initiated into Dramatic and Arts Lodge No. 757 in 1895. He would go through all three degrees in just eight days. By 1902 he would serve his lodge as Worshipful Master. In 1908 he would become the Grand Master of Scotland only to resign a short time after when he was appointed as the Governor of Australia. He was almost immediately made the Grand Master of Victoria on arriving in Victoria.
