Today in Masonic History we present Wearing the Emblems by Rob Morris.
You wear the Square! but have you gotÂ
That thing the Square denotes?Â
Is there within your inmost soulÂ
That principle which should controlÂ
Your actions, words, and thoughts?Â
The Square of Virtue, â is it there,Â
Oh, you that wear the Mason's Square?
You wear the Compass! Do you keepÂ
Within that circle dueÂ
That's circumscribed by law divine,Â
Excluding hatred, envy, sin,Â
Including all that's true?Â
The Moral Compass draws the line,Â
And lets no evil passions in!
You wear the Trowel! have you gotÂ
That mortar, old and pure,Â
Made on the recipe of GodÂ
Divulged within His ancient Word,Â
Indissoluble, sure?Â
And do you spread, 'twixt man and man,Â
That precious mixture as you can?
You wear the Oriental G!Â
Ah, Brother, have a care!Â
He whose All-Seeing Eye surveysÂ
Your inmost heart, with open gaze,Â
Knows well what thoughts are there!Â
Let no profane, irreverent wordÂ
Go up t' insult th' avenging God!
You wear the Cross! it signifiesÂ
The burdens Jesus bore,Â
Who, staggering, fell, and bleeding, rose,Â
And took to Golgotha the woesÂ
The world had borne before!Â
The Cross, â oh, let it say, Forgive,Â
Father, forgive, to all that live!
Dear Brother! if you will displayÂ
These emblems of our Art,Â
Let the great morals that they teachÂ
Be deeply graven, each for each,Â
Upon an honest heart!Â
Then they will tell, to God and man,Â
Freemasonry's all-perfect plan! Â
